Work by Paul Middleton on display

A piece by Paul MiddletonPaul Middleton, Dean of the School of The Arts, is exhibiting his recent work at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists together with the painter Rob Perry.

Rob is known for landscape interests which include exploring land of conflict such as the Somme and Auschwitz, post industrial landscapes, and work produced in the depth of winter in the highlands of Scotland. Rob and his work has appeared regularly on the BBC in programmes about the Royal Academy to Coast.

Paul’s work documents a journey from the gathering of visual information using sketches and photography which then progress to sustained paintings in the studio, concluding with deconstructed visual analysis, devoid of shape and form, which focus on colour.

The dialogues formed between the two artists provide the basis of the exhibition and publication. The differing working methodologies of the two form the focus; the notion of working on location in the land is compared with work produced away from the subject in the studio and how this can impact on the nature of the outputs. The exhibition opens on Monday 15 February at the RBSA in St. Paul’s Square in Birmingham.
