Student accommodation update

Posted on 11 April 2012

The University of Northampton recognises that living in Halls of Residence is a great way to start academic life and to make friends. Therefore the vast majority of rooms have been reserved for first year undergraduate students who are new to Northampton.

Existing students (including International students progressing onto a second year of study) may be able to apply for vacancies once the demand from first year students has been met. Please look out for further updates after the start of the 2012-13 academic year

We encourage existing students to look for accommodation using the registered Housing List of accredited landlords, details of which are available online at www.northamptonstudentpad.com. The password for the Housing List is studenthouse.

Existing students with support needs should contact Access Ability (01604 892430) or Counselling and Mental Health (01604 892404) if they wish to remain in Halls.

Park Campus Water Shutdown – Saturday 3rd March

Posted on 1 March 2012

On Saturday 3rd March the water supply to the whole of Park Campus will need to be shut down for a period of about four hours to enable a serious leak to be repaired. It is envisaged that the water will be turned off at 09:00 hrs and should be back on soon after Midday.

The Estates Department would appreciate your co-operation in ensuring taps are not left turned on as when the water is switched on there may be the possibility of overflowing from basins, sinks etc. We apologise for this inconvenience and will endeavour to ensure this disruption is minimised.

University Signs up to the Public Health Responsibility Deal

Posted on 28 February 2012

The University has signed up to the Government’s Public Health Responsibility Deal. The Responsibility Deal is the Government’s way of drawing on the potential of employers in both the private and public sectors to help tackle health inequalities through the influence they have over health in the workplace, alcohol, food and physical activity.

By signing up to the deal, the University is committing to a set of core and supporting pledges, but also to a range of specific pledges. These pledges set out the steps the University is taking to support this initiative. We need to keep the Department of Health informed as to how we aim to meet our pledges, and we will update the relevant pledge information on the web accordingly.

Further information can be found on the OHS website http://www.northampton.ac.uk/info/20296/occupational-health-and-safety/1673/public-health-responsibility-deal

or you can contact Paul Bradley directly paul.bradley@northampton.ac.uk

Problems with the Science Direct database

Posted on 13 January 2012

Due to on-going national problems with the Science Direct database we have changed to a back-up proxy system for users.  This unfortunately means that no personalisation options will be available until the full service is restored.  We apologise for the problems.

2011 – You said, we did!

Posted on 12 January 2012

“Park library is noisy and messy”

There is now a dedicated library cleaner and we have more recycling bins. We have introduced roving staff with environmental and noise control as part of their duties and finally, we have created explicit social spaces, including a cafe, on the ground floor.

And it doesn’t stop there! In 2012 we will:

Strengthen the role of roving staff and continue the refurbishment to the upper floors.

“The library should be open longer”

We have extended opening hours to midnight and Sunday mornings and in 2012 we will open for 24 hours during the exam period.

“There are not enough computers in the library”

We have replaced all the old student PCs, increased the number of computers, including laptops for loan

and distributed computers across all floors of the library. In 2012 we will continue to increase the number of laptops for loan and plan to make them self service.

“Passwords are complicated, especially Athens”

We have introduced a single log in and password for all systems, including NILE.

“The photocopiers and printers are often not working”

All library photocopiers/printers have been replaced.

“There are not enough books”

The budget for books has been increased and we have reviewed numbers of key texts. Student-led purchasing of e-books directly from the catalogue has been introduced and we have increased the number of e-books (no restrictions on how many can look at the same time). We have also worked with academic staff to remove out of date books.

And it doesn’t end there! In 2012 we will:

Improve access to resources through the new Aspire reading list system.

“We want mobile access to University information and NILE”

No problem! We provided the New University app iNorthampton.
