Holly Williams, 3rd year midwifery student attended the Florence Nightingale Study Day at Westminster Abbey earlier this year and felt honoured to have represented The University of Northampton. Hollie said “I met students from all over the country from a wide range of universities, studying different nursing subjects, it was great to listen and share everyone’s experiences. As one of the midwifery students I made sure I spoke to the other student midwives who attended in order to get an insight into their training, as it’s interesting to see if other midwifery students from different universities experience the same or different issues.” My experience of The Florence Nightingale museum were both interesting and educational, the museum provided an insight into Florence’s life and works, revealing her childhood, travels and achievements in reforming midwifery, nursing and public health with interactive exhibits and displays. The visit to Westminster Abbey was truly remarkable, we got to see the Florence Nightingale chapel which was amazing and learnt more and more about the lady with the lamp. Overall I felt this experience was priceless, I learnt tremendous amounts about Florence Nightingale’s life and legacy but I also learnt an enormous amount of information from the different people I met and their experiences. The memory of this day will always be with me as I strive to continue my career in midwifery.

Inaugural Lecture by Jorg Huber, Professor of Behavioural Health Sciences: “Does Resilience Protect Against Depression and Improve Self-care in People with Diabetes?” Professor Jorg Huber presented his inaugural lecture on Thursday 25th October to more than 50 colleagues, family and friends at the Sunley Management Centre.

Professor Huber argued that diabetes is frequently associated with poor mental health. Nevertheless the majority of people with diabetes maintain good wellbeing. It is this group which is of particular interest to researchers interested in resilience, providing a focus on the strengths and resources of individuals and groups rather than focusing on deficits and problems.

Both his and his collaborators’ research and those of others emphasises not only the personal characteristics of resilient individuals, but the importance of social support for resilience and emotional wellbeing. He suggested that it may become possible to explore resilience from a neurobiological perspective and thus developing a truly biopsychosocial approach to resilience and mental health in people not only with diabetes, but also with other long term conditions.

URB@N is a bursary scheme offering opportunities for current undergraduate students to participate in a pedagogic research project taking place at the university. Participating in a ‘real world’ research project like this is a great way of getting valuable work experience and developing new skills. There are a designated number of places on the scheme each year, and successful students will receive a £500 bursary to support their involvement in the research project. In short, URB@N provides a way to ‘earn while you learn’ alongside your studies, gain extra credentials for your CV and make an important contribution to a piece of scholarly research!

Information about the projects that are running this year are now available, and open for student applications. The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 5th December. Further information can be found on the URB@N website.
