Please Switch It Off For Christmas

At Christmas 2010 and New Year 2011, the University used over £12,000 of electricity during the 10 days that it was closed; so before you leave for your Christmas break, please switch off anything that doesn’t need to be left on over the holiday period. Delivered hospitality – from 19 September

From Monday 19 September the delivered hospitality operation will return to Senate kitchen, under the control of the University. A new menu and pricing structure is available through the website. Could all bookings made through the old system please be re-booked through the new system to ensure we can deliver the appropriate service. Staff Car Park 8 closure – Friday 16 September

Staff Car Park No. 8, at the back of Park Campus, will be closed for essential repairs on Friday 16 September for one day only. Would all users please utilise other car parks on Friday.

New delivered hospitality system

From Tuesday 30 August, the delivered hospitality service will be provided by The Caterers Ltd at both Park and Avenue campuses. The Caterers Ltd have over 40 years experience in delivering high quality hospitality and catering options to a wide range of clients and locations. Ordering hospitality can still be completed through the online form, by contacting The Caterers Ltd direct on extension 2454, or by emailing hospitality@thecaterers.co.uk. From 30 August the new hospitality menu will be available from the Catering and hospitality web page.

Car Park Closures

Due to tree felling works, the Avenue staff car parks will be unavailable for Thursday 25 and Friday 26 August 2011. Please use the Newton and Student Car Parks during these times. This is part of a programme culminating in the re-surfacing of the staff car parks. Work will also be going on to smooth out the ruts and potholes on the Main Car Park at Park Campus; please be aware the certain parts of the car park will be taped off to allow this work to happen. Valid University ID card required for free travel on University-supported buses

In order to receive free or subsidised travel on bus services 7, 18, 19, 19E & 21, students must produce a valid University of Northampton identity card which meets the following conditions:

The date of expiry must not have been exceeded;
The name and photo on the card must be that of the passenger producing the card and subsequently travelling on the bus;
The bus driver/conductor can refuse to give free/subsidised travel if he/she is in any doubt about the identity of the passenger or the validity of the identity card produced. Therefore, please check the validity of your University identity card before boarding the buses.

New fire alarm testing regime

Starting Thursday 4 August at Park Campus and Friday 5 August at Avenue Campus and Podiatry, there will be a new weekly fire alarm testing regime. It is anticipated that testing will start at around 8am and there will be a set time for each building to be activated.

This set time will be adjusted over the first few activations as there may be a ‘learning curve’. It is hoped that after a few tests we can develop a regular pattern so the testing time will then be repeatable throughout the year. There is no need to evacuate during these tests. It is envisaged that the bells/sounders will be activated for approximately 15 seconds, if the alarm continues past this time then it should be considered to be an actual fire alarm, the building evacuated and the occupants directed to the designated assembly points in the usual manner.

There will be general signage placed around the campuses on Thursdays/Fridays but it will not be building specific. It is hoped that occupants will soon get to know that the alarms will go off at the same time, same day, every week.

Orchids galore!

For the past three years, the University’s Estates team has incorporated actions to encourage biodiversity on the University estate. This involves leaving areas of the outer reaches of the campuses to have longer grass over the summer to let wild flowers set seed and for wildlife to flourish.

One outcome of this management has been the discovery of Bee Orchids in several locations. Bee Orchids are a native wild species of orchid that are elusive and tend to be found in areas of low-intensity managed grassland. The flower fools male bees into pollinating it by mimicking the shape, colour and even the scent of a female bee. Although neither common nor rare, the Bee Orchid, like many orchids, is an elusive species that tends to fluctuate greatly in numbers from year to year. The discovery of a new population opposite one of the Halls of Residence was a pleasant discovery this year.
