2011 – You said, we did!

Posted on 12 January 2012

“Park library is noisy and messy”

There is now a dedicated library cleaner and we have more recycling bins. We have introduced roving staff with environmental and noise control as part of their duties and finally, we have created explicit social spaces, including a cafe, on the ground floor.

And it doesn’t stop there! In 2012 we will:

Strengthen the role of roving staff and continue the refurbishment to the upper floors.

“The library should be open longer”

We have extended opening hours to midnight and Sunday mornings and in 2012 we will open for 24 hours during the exam period.

“There are not enough computers in the library”

We have replaced all the old student PCs, increased the number of computers, including laptops for loan

and distributed computers across all floors of the library. In 2012 we will continue to increase the number of laptops for loan and plan to make them self service.

“Passwords are complicated, especially Athens”

We have introduced a single log in and password for all systems, including NILE.

“The photocopiers and printers are often not working”

All library photocopiers/printers have been replaced.

“There are not enough books”

The budget for books has been increased and we have reviewed numbers of key texts. Student-led purchasing of e-books directly from the catalogue has been introduced and we have increased the number of e-books (no restrictions on how many can look at the same time). We have also worked with academic staff to remove out of date books.

And it doesn’t end there! In 2012 we will:

Improve access to resources through the new Aspire reading list system.

“We want mobile access to University information and NILE”

No problem! We provided the New University app iNorthampton.

Student Finance Company phishing emails: ‘Notification of Student Finance Payment’

Posted on 5 September 2011, submitted by Wai-Tong Cheung

Please be wary of phishing/spam emails pretending to be from the Student Finance Company. These emails link you to unofficial websites which either try to steal your log-in details or put your computer at risk with viruses/malware/spyware. The best thing to do if you are not sure if an email is official is to ignore any links in the email and visit the company/organisation’s website by typing it into your browser.

Don’t be fooled into unknowingly sending 39,000 (or more) spam emails!

Posted on 3 August 2011, submitted by Alison Brook

Another email scam is going around, asking for your username, log-in, date of birth, and real name. This one has the subject line ‘Warning!!! Your Email Account Quota Exceeded..’. At least one person has replied, and as a direct result, we have had to block over 39,000 spam messages sent out from the compromised account. If three people replied, that would be already 117,000 messages, 30 people responding would be over a million messages – you can see how quickly it builds up and how much we block! Please remember that the University ICT team will never ask for your log-in and password details by email. If in doubt, please contact ISDirect on ext 3333, or 01604 893333, or, isdirect@northampton.ac.uk. Thank you.

Disruption of network printing services

Posted on 3 August 2011, submitted by Roy King

Due to essential upgrades to the University’s network printing system (Equitrac), there will be major disruption to network printing on Saturday 13 August between 9am – 5pm. This will affect both staff and student printing. The upgrades will include moving the Equitrac database to a different server and applying software updates. This will provide a more robust system as well as fixing several errors in the current version of software. If you have any questions regarding this, please email roy.king@northampton.ac.uk
