Early in 2012, the Careers & Employability team will be launching a pilot Employability Mentoring Scheme which aims to pair up a second year student from an ‘under-represented’ group with a member of the University’s alumni community. If you feel that you might benefit from being mentored, please go to the Careers NILE module where further information is available under ‘Mentoring’. Apprentice candidate gives inspirational talk to students

The University recently welcomed Melody Hossaini to campus, a candidate on BBCs popular The Apprentice 2011, when she delivered a talk to students at the annual Careers Fair at Sunley Conference Centre, Park Campus, organised by the Careers & Employability Service.

Melody informed students about her company InspirEngage and how she set up a social enterprise, touching on her experiences on The Apprentice as well as providing advice on how to achieve your career goals. Melody commented:

“I really enjoyed coming to the University and was so impressed by your students. I did an interactive session which included some exercises designed to get people thinking and asked everyone to write down a vision. I then invited people to share them. One person said he wanted to change negative stereotypes in his community. Another said he wanted to improve the school education system in India, and one student said his vision was to pay back the money his parents had invested in his education.

“I was so impressed by how utterly selfless everyone was, and this was followed by amazing questions and feedback in the bit I called the Dialogue Session.”

If so, you may be interested in the launch of The Northampton Employability Award – NEW for October 2011.

This employer-endorsed Award has been developed to recognise individuals who go above and beyond their studies at university.

The Award recognises students gaining experience through numerous activities such as volunteering, part-time work and membership of a sports club or society.

If you want to get a competitive edge over the other graduates in your sector and would like the opportunity to put something different on your CV then this Award could be for you.

This year the Award is being piloted for 50 second year students and places are being offered on a first come, first served basis. Registration sessions are taking place over the next 4 weeks, visit www.northampton.ac.uk/employabilityaward for further details.
