Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Poppy Appeal. The boxes facilitated around campus through the Centre for Community Volunteering raised £412.91, which was up on last year’s total of £367.75.

The purpose of NAASH is to prevent and relieve hardship, need and distress among those who are homeless and to assist homeless people with their immediate accommodation needs and offer advice, support and information concerning long term resettlement into independent accommodation. NAASH are looking for enthusiastic new Board members to assist them through a period of time that will see changes to their service and provision. If you have an interest in homeless issues, a background in finance, legal, fundraising or housing and want to help initiate positive changes in people’s lives think about becoming a Board Member. Canal and River Trust – Chairs and Members needed

Role: Chairs and Members, Salary: Expenses Paid. Closing date: 27 January 2012. Be part of the Canal & River Trust – we are recruiting for Chairs for the following regions: North East, East Midlands, Central Shires, South East and London. We are recruiting Members for the following regions: Manchester & Pennines, North Wales & Borders and South Wales & Severn. These roles are voluntary with expenses paid and will involve approximately two – four days a month.

Last year the government announced that British Waterways would transfer its canals and rivers in England and Wales to a new charitable trust, the Canal & River Trust. The Canal & River Trust will be up and running by April 2012. 12 Waterways Partnerships will help guide the work of the new Trust, giving local people a voice in the operation of their canal. We are now recruiting for Chairs and Members for the Waterways Partnerships. These are exciting new roles in a new organisation and we are looking for outstanding people to help take us forward.

Waterway Partnership Chairs – reporting to the Chair of Trustees and Council, the Chair of the Partnership will be the lead ambassador for the Waterways Partnership, and through the Partnership play a key role in shaping the future of the waterways in each Partnership area. Working closely with the Waterway Manager, under the leadership of the Chair, the Partnership will develop an overarching vision for the Trust’s waterways within the Partnership area and develop strategies and plans to encourage more people to use and get involved with their local waterway. In addition to having a track record of championing the interests of community and voluntary sector organisations, it will be important for the Chair to have experience of working with local authorities and business at a senior level. The roles are voluntary with expenses paid and will involve approximately two -five days a month.

Waterway Partnership Members – Members of the Partnership need a range of knowledge, skills and experience relevant to the development of waterways for the widest public benefit. Relevant interests and expertise include boating and other waterway activities -including walking, angling, cycling; fundraising and volunteering; finance and commerce; planning and regeneration; environment and heritage; engineering and asset management; community engagement and wider partnership working with local government, commercial and charitable sectors. Staff Children’s Christmas Party delivers seasonal excitement

This year’s staff Children’s Christmas Party on 13 December saw Santa arrive early from the North Pole to distribute presents to over 70 thrilled children. The popular annual event at Park Campus was organised by the University’s Centre for Community Volunteering who worked with a group of around 20 student volunteers. It featured a tea party, face painting, craft activities, biscuit decorating, disco dancing, and games – all part of a special University program to encourage staff’s children to become sleepy for early bedtime on Christmas Eve. One happy parent later commented: “Thank you for a wonderful party. You and Santa’s little helpers worked so hard and the grotto was a sight to behold. The gifts were marvellous – you could see a lot of thought went into them and they were absolutely just right.”

Volunteers needed to mentor young people aged 11-18 years

Volunteers under the age of 21 are needed to mentor young people with a scheme run by CAN, a local drug and alcohol support charity. If you want to gain experience in supporting a young person, aged 11-18 years, then pop into John Clare B2 at Park Campus to pick up further details and an application form.

Volunteer with ‘looked after’ Children

Northamptonshire County Council Children’s Rights Service need volunteers to support workshops for ‘looked after’ children and young people. The youth groups offer a programme of informal education mixed with positive activities, chosen and agreed by the young people including budgeting, drug misuse, sexual health, dance, music, poetry, cooking, sport, etc… To register your interest, please email volunteers@northampton.ac.uk.

Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish language partners needed

Staff and students raise thousands for Children in Need 2011

A huge well done and thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Children in Need 2011 appeal. The final total is a whopping £2103.09! Along with the cake sales, raffles, book sales and ‘name the bear’ activities, staff and students really got stuck into dressing up, Bucketeering and enjoying themselves. Amongst our wacky events this year we saw the Grahams’ Sellik and Sykes go head-to-head in an éclair eating competition that saw them both attempting to eat 10 éclairs in 10 minutes! Graham Sykes was the overall winner at 8 éclairs completely eaten. Thanks guys, a great fun event to watch and you raised a fantastic £198 for Pudsey.

Mary Lietch, Gurpreet Jabbal and Phoebe Lau, first year students, undertook a 24hr sponsored silence and raised £115.24 just for keeping quiet! This year saw many of our International students, as part of their pre-sessional English course, taking part by hosting a range of games and activities that raised over £400. And of course the stocks, whilst not raising a huge amount, proved a draw for a number of volunteers brave enough to take part, so a special thank you to Alex Coyle from Finance, Laura Challis a first year student and Tore Sikuade, our CfCV volunteer administrator.

Help to plan a community event for the Chinese New Year

Northamptonshire Libraries need volunteers to help plan and organise cultural events for the Chinese New Year to be held on Saturday 21 January 2012. The events will include community activities such as lantern making, food tasting, children’s craft, language activities, etc… These activities will be based at the Central Library in Northampton Town Centre, and potentially other libraries across the county depending on how many volunteers there are. There will be an information session for students who are interested in being involved on Friday 2 December, 2.15pm Senate, Room 138, Park Campus. Come along and find out more! If you are interested in volunteering to help with Chinese cultural events, then please email: volunteers@northampton.ac.uk with your name, student number, degree course and if you are able to attend the meeting on Friday 2 December at 2.15pm.
