School of Education works with local schools on maths skills

Members of the Mathematics team within the School of Education will be working with ten local schools in Wellingborough on an exciting action research project, developing calculation skills and exploring algebra to deepen children’s understanding of arithmetic. The schools involved are Warwick Primary, Park Junior, Olympic Primary, Freemans Junior, Croyland Primary, All Saints Primary, Victoria Primary, Redwell Junior, Our Lady’s Junior and Weavers Secondary School. The project will run from January 2012 to December 2012.

Want to make a difference to the lives of young people and earn a wage?

The University is delighted to launch a new opportunity for students to contribute to the local community and enhance their own employability prospects. University ambassadors: Aspiration and Achievement (Word 169KB) will be employed to work with local primary schools on a range of exciting projects. Full training will be given and successful applicants will be paid £6.84 an hour for a guaranteed 40 hours (March to July). National Early Years appointment – congratulations Eunice

Congratulations to Eunice Lumsden, Senior Lecturer in Early Years, who has been invited by Jane Hayward, the Chief Executive of the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC), to become a member of the external reference group being established to support the review of the EYPS (Early Years Professional Status) standards. The EYPS standards were launched in 2007 and are the basis for the assessment and accreditation for the award of the EYPS. The government’s policy statement ‘Supporting Families in the Foundation Years’ announced that CWDC has been asked to commence a review of the EYPS standards.

National Early Years appointment for Jane

Jane MurrayCongratulations to Senior Lecturer in Education and Early Years Jane Murray who has been appointed to the national executive of TACTYC (Association for the Professional Development of Early Years Educators). TACTYC advocates and lobbies on issues relating to the Early Years workforce across the UK and encourages high quality international research in the early years field, disseminated through its in-house journal Early Years.

Did you know…over 3700 Higher Level Teaching Assistants in the School of Education

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant programme recognises teaching assistants who are working at a higher level. Ken addresses continuing professional development needs for the Wider Schools Workforce

Ken BlandKen Bland, Head of Continuing Professional Development, School of Education, recently gave a presentation on the CPD needs of the Wider Schools Workforce at a regional CPD conference at Kegworth. The audience included new National College Associates, TDA regional leads, representatives of the Teaching Schools in the East Midlands and LA officers. The presentation covered the current number of wider school staff in the East Midlands (30,000) compared to the number of teachers (37,000) and the number of HLTAs in the region (3700) and the current policy vacuum for this group of staff. The detail of the new remit for the Teaching Agency is currently being finalised by the Department and there was strong support from the audience for a higher policy profile for TAs.

Education strengthens links with Madrid

Estelle TarryThe Education, Children and Young People Division of the School of Education has been working closely with the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), building links with international schools. Estelle Tarry has just returned from Numont International School, Madrid, having delivered training sessions to both Teachers and Teaching Assistants. Numont International School has approximately 320 children from 48 different countries and follows the National Curriculum. The conference will hopefully provide more opportunities to deliver training and the new Certificate for Teaching Assistants in an International Context (CTAIC) being developed by the School of Education.
