Krishnan Guru Murthy and Bill ToyerThe University was the main sponsor at a recent national conference entitled ‘Sustainable Communities 2011: Local Growth, Local Futures’, held at the Brewery in London and chaired by the broadcaster Krishnan Guru Murthy. The conference aimed to examine specific areas of government policy including the developing programme around localism, which is radically affecting the broad Sustainable Communities agenda; sustainability in this context looks at the interconnections between the economic, social and the environmental. Chris Durkin, Associate Director of the Northampton Institute for Urban Affairs, was one of the keynote speakers and the focus of his address was the developments around the NIUA and the recently set up Collaborative Centre for the Built Environment – an initiative with Moulton College and University Centre Milton Keynes, which provides us with a huge opportunity in areas such as sustainability, heritage construction management, urban design and sustainable construction. …continue reading University sponsors major conference on sustainable communities

Rachel makes Routledge Education Class of 2011

Posted on 13 October 2011, submitted by Claire Bicknell

Rachel MaunderSenior Lecturer in Psychology, School of Social Sciences, Dr Rachel Maunder has made the prestigious Routledge Class of 2011 – this means her work is included as one of the most downloaded articles published in Educational Research in 2010, and is now free for anyone to access and read for the next 12 months. “I was very pleasantly surprised to receive the notification that my paper ‘Pupil and staff perceptions of bullying in secondary schools: comparing behavioural definitions and their perceived seriousness’ was the most downloaded article in Educational Research this year – particularly as I hadn’t consciously done promotion work to publicise the article after it was published,” Rachel commented, “This suggests that there is wide interest in the work and that people are hearing about it. I hope this will lead to the research having an impact on the field and especially to anti-bullying practice in schools.” View online The Class of 2011.

Research Student Training: Critical thinking using Argument Mapping

Thinking Critically Using Argument Mapping

Dr Graham Smith – School of Social Sciences.

Argument mapping (AM) is an innovative technique for visualising arguments and enhancing critical thinking. AM helps individuals and groups to reach better decisions. It is particularly useful in helping groups to fully explore and reach agreement on contentious issues. AM can also be used in educational settings to promote the deeper understanding of complex arguments and to develop critical thinking skills.

The method involves the production of an argument map consisting of a network of boxes with connecting arrows. A completed argument map serves as a summary of a debate, including all the views and opinions expressed perhaps by many different contributors. Argument maps are easily and quickly interpreted permitting sound judgments and as such they make excellent executive summaries.

After an introduction to AM, activities will provide hands-on experience of producing an argument map and drawing conclusions from it. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the various uses of AM within decision making and educational settings.
